Which directories are good for SEO?
Apr 24th
This is a question I hear a lot and it’s a perfectly valid one. I often see Search engine optimisation companies offering to list you in 500+ directories and to be honest I highly doubt the value of that. There are a few directories which I’d expect any site im working on to be listed in:
- DMOZ – this is one of the kingpin directories. It’s been around for a long time but it can be notoriously hard to get into these days. DMOZ is moderated by select members and it seems that often a listing can take quite sometime to get in, or sometimes not at all. DMOZ is free, but as discussed it’s hard to get into. It can take some time to drill down to the relevant category to list your site in but take your time and try and make it as accurate as possible.
- Yahoo Directory – the Yahoo directory is worth getting yourself into. You do have to pay a fee but it’s very quick and it’s always one on my list.
- Best of the Web (BOTW) – You can either pay a one off fee or a recurring charge to get onto BOTW but it’s worth it. This is one directory that I see as giving best bang for your buck, it’s cheaper than the Yahoo directory and does usually give a good boost.
- Business.com – again, this is another great directory to get yourself listed in. Business.com is a highly credible directory which has been around since about 1998. You do have to pay for a listing, just like Yahoo and BOTW, but as said before it is worth paying for. More >

What do SEOs see as the most important ranking factors?
Apr 23rd
There are many factors of on and off page SEO that are important to the ranking of your website. However, in what order are they important?
Here is my list, in order of importance:
- The use of keyword in the title tag
- The use of anchor text from an inbound link
- What is the global link authority of the sites linking into you
- Age of domain
- Internal link structure and link popularity within the structure
- Are the links coming into your site of relevance, i.e. is a site about technology linking to your own tech site?
- Your keyword usage within body content More >
